Kansas Department of Commerce accepting nominations for 2008 Governor’s Exporter of the Year award

The Kansas Department of Commerce is now accepting nominations for the 2008 Governor’s Exporter of the Year Award, which honors a single Kansas company for excellence in international marketing.

All chambers of commerce, organizations, businesses and individuals are encouraged to nominate a company that has excelled in international trade and overseas marketing. Companies can also nominate themselves.

“Kansas companies that generate export sales help our state by boosting our economy and enhancing the image of Kansas overseas,” said Kansas Department of Commerce Secretary David Kerr. “This award showcases successful Kansas exporters as role models for other Kansas companies and demonstrates that international activity can benefit virtually any Kansas business willing to look outside U.S. borders for new customers.”

The deadline for submitting nominations is Jan. 25. The nomination form, evaluation criteria and other program information can be found here.

Governor Kathleen Sebelius will announce the winner at the annual Kansas Cavalry Encampment next year.

“A growing number of Kansas companies are realizing the importance of operating in a global economy,” Governor Sebelius said. “This represents a trend among Kansas businesses toward globalization and international trade, a trend that contributes to job creation and economic expansion.”

The Exporter of the Year Award is co-sponsored by the Department of Commerce and the Kansas International Trade Coordinating Council, which together work to increase awareness of international trade opportunities among Kansas business leaders.

This will be the 20th year the Department has sponsored the Exporter of the Year Award. Past winners include The Bradbury Co., Inc. (2007), Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc. (2006), BG Products, Inc. (2005), Tramco, Inc. (2004), American Crane & Tractor Parts, Inc. (2003), Butler National Corporation (2002), Landoll Corporation (2001) and Innovative Material Systems (2000).

Kansas businesses totaled a record $8.63 billion in exports in 2006, marking the second straight year the state has achieved record-setting export totals. The 2006 figure shattered the 2005 record of $6.72 billion and marked the state’s third straight year of export growth. Kansas exports have increased 127 percent since 1998.
